Several parishioners and local businesses have asked Father Raphael, or members of Parish Council, whether the Facebook group “Friends with a Devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes” is acting on behalf of our Parish. To clarify, this group has no affiliation with the Church of St. Francis de Sales. They are an independent group organizing fundraising to purchase and preserve the Allaben Church, which was decommissioned by the Archdiocese in 2006. Currently, the Allaben church is not for sale. While this is the first church built in our parish (1879), it is not the oldest Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in the U.S. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Fr. Raphael or Pat Ruane (688-5357).
A public arts program in New York City initiated a project in June 2018 to recognize the contributions of women in helping to build the city. “Of the 150 statues in New York City, only five figure women. She Built NYC would spend $5 million to build the new monuments.” St. Francis X. Cabrini received the highest number of votes (219) – no one else came close.
Last month, the NYC selection committee skipped over Mother Cabrini in favor of other nominees to honor with a statue. This powerful woman religious came to the cityat the end of the 19th century with her Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
They worked tirelessly for poor immigrants and opened schools, hospitals, and orphanages in New York City and in over 15
countries throughout the world. St. Francis X. Cabrini was canonized in 1946 as the Patroness of Immigrants. The saint’s remains are enshrined in her chapel in New York City and open to the public. Her Feast Day is November 13. You’ll enjoy the visit! Source: Catholic News Agency. https://cabrinishrinenyc.org/
